Your First Solo Trip: A Guide From Packing to Staying Safe

A first solo trip always comes with a bit of anxiety: what if I get lost, is it weird to eat alone, will I be safe? Yet so many people say afterward that it was their most rewarding experience, a time when they made every decision themselves and truly came to understand who they are.

Preparing before you go

Choose a destination that is friendly to solo travelers, book a place to stay for the first night or two, and save the address, an offline map, and emergency contact numbers. Tell someone close to you your itinerary. Pack light, since you will be carrying everything yourself.

Staying safe

Trust your instincts: if a place or a situation feels off, leave. Keep your money and documents in several different spots, avoid flashing valuables, and limit walking after dark in unfamiliar areas. Always keep your phone charged and a way to reach out.

Enjoying the freedom

The best part of traveling alone is that you never have to bend to anyone else’s schedule. Want to linger in a cafe all morning? Go ahead. Feel like changing your plans halfway through? No problem. Strike up a conversation with a local, try an unfamiliar dish, and allow yourself to get a little lost, because sometimes the loveliest corners are the ones that were never on the itinerary.

Don’t wait until you have a travel companion to set off. Sometimes the best company you can have is yourself.
