
Home Wi-Fi is usually set up once and then left alone – as long as it works, that’s the end of it. But that very hands-off approach is why so many household networks still run on default passwords or ancient settings for years. A stranger within range can crack the password, freeload on your connection, or – more dangerously – snoop on the devices inside your home.
The good news is that you don’t need deep expertise to protect yourself. Just half an hour spent adjusting a few settings in your router’s admin page raises your safety level considerably.
Change the default password and pick a neutral network name
The first thing to do is change both the Wi-Fi password and the login password for the router’s admin page. These two are different: one connects your devices to the network, the other lets you into the settings. Many devices ship with an admin account and password that are identical across an entire product line – something anyone can look up.
When naming your network, avoid anything tied to your house number, your name, or your phone number. A neutral name that reveals nothing about your identity is a small extra layer of discretion.
Choose the newest encryption standard your device supports
In the security settings, choose WPA3 if it’s available, or at least WPA2. Older standards like WEP or early WPA were cracked long ago, and if the router is still left on one of them by default, even a long password is easy to break.
Your Wi-Fi password should be over ten characters, mixing letters and numbers. A phrase that’s easy for you to remember but meaningless to outsiders is usually safer than a short, complicated string.
Enable a guest network for unfamiliar devices
Most routers today have a guest network feature. This is a separate Wi-Fi network, isolated from your main one. When guests come over, or when you connect cheap smart devices, put them on the guest network. If one of those devices is compromised, it still can’t see your family’s main computers and phones.
Update your router’s software
A router is also a small computer, and it too has vulnerabilities. Manufacturers occasionally release updates to patch them. Go into the admin page to check whether a new version is available, or turn on automatic updates if the device supports it. A router that stopped receiving support years ago is a candidate for replacement.
No network is perfectly secure, but most household risk comes from forgotten settings rather than sophisticated hackers. Changing the password, choosing modern encryption, separating out a guest network, and updating regularly are enough to put your mind at ease about your connection.
