Caring for Your Eyes When You Work a Lot on a Computer

Screens have become the center of both work and entertainment. We stare at a computer all day and then switch to a phone, giving our eyes almost no time to truly relax.

The result is digital eye strain: dryness, burning, blurriness, headaches, and trouble focusing. Fortunately, a few simple habits can significantly reduce this discomfort.

Why screens tire the eyes

When looking at a screen, we blink less than usual, which dries out the surface of the eye quickly. At the same time, the eyes must constantly adjust to see clearly up close, a demanding task if it goes on too long.

Glare, poor contrast, and bad sitting posture make everything worse. Taken together, this is why many people end the workday with heavy, weary eyes.

The 20-20-20 rule

A simple way to rest your eyes is that every twenty minutes, look at something about six meters away for twenty seconds. Shifting your focus into the distance lets the eye muscles relax after straining to see up close.

You should also make an effort to blink more while you work to keep your eyes moist. It may sound trivial, but these short breaks add up to a noticeable difference.

Setting up your work environment

Place the screen about an arm’s length from your eyes, with the top edge at or slightly below eye level so you look slightly downward, a natural posture that causes less dryness. Adjust the screen’s brightness to match the surrounding light.

Avoid letting lamps or windows reflect off the screen and cause glare. Soft room lighting, neither too dark nor too harsh, helps your eyes work less hard.

When to see a doctor

Most eye discomfort eases once you rest and adjust your habits. But if blurred vision persists, you have significant pain, or you see dark spots or unusual flashes of light, don’t put off getting it checked.

Regular eye exams also help catch refractive problems early. Wearing the right prescription is sometimes the simple solution to eye fatigue you thought was caused by overwork.

Your eyes serve you without rest, so they deserve to be cared for. A few short breaks and a sensible seating setup are all it takes to leave your eyes less tired after each long day.
