Eating While Traveling: Savoring Food and Staying Healthy

Food is one of the greatest joys of traveling. Tasting local dishes helps you understand a place in a way no museum can.

But eating in unfamiliar places can also upset your stomach if you’re careless. A few small tips help you savor freely without ending up flat on your back in the hotel.

Eat where the locals crowd in

A spot packed with locals is usually a good sign of both flavor and safety. The ingredients there turn over quickly and stay fresh, and the food has been vetted by the very people who live there.

Conversely, be cautious of empty eateries displaying food that was cooked long ago. Freshly cooked hot food is always safer than dishes left to cool in the open air.

Try new dishes at a measured pace

When you arrive somewhere new, your digestive system needs time to adjust to unfamiliar foods and spices. Don’t eat too many exotic dishes at once on your first day.

Try a little at a time so your body can adapt. If a dish is unusually spicy or greasy, eat it in moderation so you can still enjoy many meals afterward.

Be careful with water and raw food

In some places, tap water isn’t safe to drink directly. When you’re not sure, use bottled water and think twice about the ice in your drinks.

Raw vegetables and pre-cut fruit also call for caution where hygiene isn’t guaranteed. Fruit you peel yourself is usually safer than the kind cut in advance and displayed outdoors.

Keep a few familiar foods on hand

Not every meal has to be an adventure. Carrying a few familiar snacks keeps you from going hungry mid-itinerary and gives you something to tide you over until you find a place you like.

If you have a sensitive stomach, packing digestive aids or basic medicine also brings peace of mind. A little preparation is enough to keep an unexpected mishap from ruining the whole trip.

Eating while traveling is a balance between curiosity and good sense. Be open to new flavors, but also listen to your body, so that every meal becomes a lovely memory rather than a lesson you’ll never forget.
